The bottom line

I’ve seen a lot of brands release a version two product that isn’t all that different from the original, but this isn’t the case with the Argus G2.

The design and build quality have both been improved, the features have received upgrades, and the performance is spot-on. The new pods are an all-around improvement with their leak resistance and flavor, although the dark tint is a design feature that I could do without.

The G2 delivers in every aspect that you could want from a pod vape with its nice design, good flavor, excellent battery life and charging speeds, and leak-free pods. If you currently own the Argus G, the G2 is worth the upgrade. If you don’t, the G2 is a great pod vape that competes with the best on the market right now.

Just around a year ago Voopoo released the Argus G, a tall and slender pod vape with a display, adjustable wattage, and adjustable airflow. Now the version two has been released and it’s called (unsurprisingly) the Argus G2.

The Argus G2 maintains all of the features of the original Argus G but brings them some upgrades. The display is larger, nicer and in full color, the maximum wattage has been increased up to 30W from 25W, and the airflow slider has been improved.

Perhaps the most noteworthy change is that the Argus G2 comes with new, 3ml capacity Top Fill Cartridges. These cartridges are backwards compatible with all ARGUS pod family products.

If you own the original Argus G, is the Argus G2 worth upgrading to? What if you’re just looking for a new pod vape, is this the one to choose? I’ll tell you everything that you need to know in this review.

Design & Build Quality

  • VOOPOO Argus G2 - ARGUS G2 and Argus G Comparison
Argus G2 (left) vs Argus G (right)

The original Argus G was a really nice device and honestly, I didn’t think that there was anything majorly wrong with the design or build quality. It seems like VOOPOO thought the same as, while they’ve made some improvements and refinements to the design on the G2, it’s not all that different from the original.

Putting the two side-by-side, the G2 is larger but only slightly. The Argus G2 is 121mm tall, 26.4mm wide, and 15.2mm deep. On the other hand, the original is 110.9mm tall, 25.7mm wide, and 13.5mm deep. The difference in height mostly comes down to the taller 3ml pods that come with the Argus G2. Otherwise, the width and depth are very similar but the Argus G2 is just a bit larger.

The weight is a different story and it’s obvious when I hold the two in my hands. The Argus G2 is significantly heavier than the original. While I still think that the G2 is portable enough, it’s certainly less portable than the original Argus G.

The increased size and weight of the Argus G2 aren’t for no reason though. The design has been tastefully improved and the overall feel and finish are fitting of a 2024 pod vape. The zinc alloy body feels solid and looks great. It has also been pretty durable during my testing. The finish does pick up and hold fingerprints though.

  • VOOPOO Argus G2 - 8 Airflow 1

The screen on the G2 is absolutely gorgeous. It’s a 0.96” full color screen that features a nice UI. On each side of the screen there are vertical LED bars that light up when you take a draw or press the button. I think that they look really cool but if you’re not a fan then they can be turned off completely.

On one side of the device there is a button and a Type-C charging port. This button can be pressed and held to vape but it is also how you control the Argus G2. More on this in the “Features’ section of this review. The button feels firm and well-built just like the rest of the G2.

The other side of the G2 features an airflow slider that is very similar to the one on the original Argus G. The slider is very firm and it takes some effort to adjust. The 3 airflow holes on the slider appear to be slightly larger than the ones on the original but the result is the same; a draw that goes from RDL to tight MTL depending on the pod that you’re using.

Two last things to note in this section. One is that the Argus G2 comes with a nice lanyard in the package. It’s a simple black lanyard but it’s nice to have. The second is that the bottom of the G2 has a rubber pad to prevent it from sliding around when sat upright. Since it’s so tall, I almost never stood it up straight for fear of it toppling over so this rubber pad is almost irrelevant. But the times that I did stand it up straight, the rubber pad actually made it topple over more easily.

Features

VOOPOO Argus G2 - 9 Display

Like the original Argus G, the Argus G2 features both adjustable wattage and adjustable airflow. The maximum wattage output of the G2 is 30W, a 5W increase over the 25W maximum output wattage of the Argus G. To change the wattage, press the button three times.

While the Argus G was relatively simple and only allowed you to adjust the wattage, the Argus G2 has three different modes: SUPER, SMART, and ECO. SMART mode is essentially like regular wattage mode on any other device, while ECO mode is a battery saver mode that you can use to eek out a little extra usage time. SUPER mode is a bit confusing as there isn’t any information available online about what it does specifically, but from my testing it seems to boost the voltage a bit in order to deliver a stronger draw. Changing modes can be done by pressing the button twice.

The display on the Argus G2 is a big upgrade from the original. The 0.96” full color screen is clear and informative, offering up information on your battery life (icon and percentage), output wattage, mode, coil resistance, and puff count. Interestingly, each mode also has a different UI as well as a different animation that appears when you vape.

I mentioned the vertical LED bars earlier and, while I like them, I understand that some people may not. If you’re not a fan then you can turn off the LEDs by pressing the button five times to enter the menu. Here you can turn the device off, clear the puff counter, lock the button (draw activated firing still works), or turn on/off the LEDs.

Argus G2 Button Combinations

  • Adjust Wattage: Press the button three times.
  • Change modes: Press the button twice.
  • Enter the menu: Press the button five times. Here you can turn off the device completely, clear the puff counter, lock the button, or turn on/off the LED bars.

Pods

VOOPOO Argus G2 - 12

One of the largest upgrades that the Argus G2 brings over the original Argus G is the pods. These pods have a 3ml capacity, unless you’re in a TPD country where they are 2ml. This extra 1ml capacity makes the pods slightly taller than other Argus family pods but otherwise they’re very similar.

One change that I don’t like is that the pods are tinted. The pods for the original Argus G were nearly clear but these pods have quite the dark tint to them. This makes it difficult to see inside the pod without a light source and it’s overall a step backwards in ease-of-use.

VOOPOO’s other Argus pods filled from the front, but these new top fill pods fill from the side. Now, you might be thinking “That isn’t top fill if it’s on the side!” and you would be right; kind of. While it’s a bit confusing, these pods sit in the G2 with the fill port exposed; they’re top fill in the sense that they aren’t hidden when the pod is inserted.

VOOPOO Argus G2 - 13

Two pods come with the Argus G2: a 0.4Ω cartridge and a 0.7Ω cartridge. These are both of the new top fill cartridges and as of the time of writing this review there aren’t any other new pods available. These pods are backwards compatible with older ARGUS pod devices and older ARGUS pods will also work in the Argus G2.

You’ll notice that both of these pods are relatively low resistance, so this means that the Argus G2 isn’t going to work great with high-strength nicotine salt ejuices, at least not right out of the box.

You could always grab a pack of older, high-resistance ARGUS pods to use but then you would be losing out on the improved flavor and leak resistance of these new pods. I recommend using low-mid strength nic salts (<30mg) with the 0.7Ω cartridge and low strength nic salts (<10mg) or freebase nicotine ejuices with the 0.4Ω cartridge.

VOOPOO says that these new pods offer leak resistance for 30 days, as well as a lifespan of 90ml of e-liquid usage.

Battery life & Charging

VOOPOO Argus G2 - 11

The Argus G2 doesn’t feature big upgrades in the battery capacity department, maintaining a 1000mAh capacity just like the original.

VOOPOO says that you can get 3 days of vaping out of a single charge but I managed to drain the battery in about 2 days on average. The battery life is going to depend on the pod, wattage that you use, and your vaping habits, but I would say that the battery life is pretty good.

Charging speed is listed as 2A and the Argus G2 uses Type-C charging. The port is located on the side of the device. I timed charging from dead to full as taking 35 minutes, so it’s pretty fast.  You can also vape on the G2 while it charges so it’s not the end of the world if it dies and you’re wanting to vape.

Performance

VOOPOO Argus G2 - 14

The Argus G2 is really versatile when it comes to the airflow and that’s something that I really appreciated while using it. Both of the included pods allow you to vape RDL (restricted direct-lung) with the airflow open, but they can also be used for tight MTL vaping by closing the airflow down. Loose MTL and medium MTL vaping are also possible by setting the airflow in between.

Since both of the included pods are relatively low-resistance, high-strength nicotine salt ejuices are a no-go. The highest strength that I used was 30mg/ml with the 0.7Ω pod and even that felt like a lot for me. For me personally, a 20mg/ml nicotine salt ejuice was perfect with the 0.7Ω pod and a 10mg/ml nicotine salt ejuice was really great with the 0.4Ω pod. All of the ejuices that I used were 50/50 VG/PG.

VOOPOO’s claims of leak-resistance for 30 days and solid flavor for 90ml of ejuice are bold but seem to check out. I’ve been using the G2 pods for just over three weeks and I haven’t had any leaking from either pod. The 90ml lifespan of the pods is harder for me to verify because I haven’t been able to go through that amount of ejuice with each pod just yet. But after three weeks of constant use, both pods are still performing as-new.

Both pods deliver excellent flavor that is as-good and maybe slightly better than VOOPOO’s other Argus pods. I get a lot of depth from my ejuices and just really great vapor – these are satisfying pods to use.

Verdict
