Our Verdict

The AUXO Calent is an excellent portable dry herb vaporizer. It has a premium and high-end look and feel, and the performance and vapor quality are similarly excellent. The body is ergonomic and a pleasure to hold, and the aluminum alloy body keeps it lightweight enough to take with you anywhere. The 2900mAh battery is surprisingly large for the size and weight of the Calent, and a single charge will last for an hour of usage time — more than enough for a day out of the house.

The dual conduction and infrared heating maintains the flavor of the material, while still extracting all of the goodness from your herbs. If strong effects are what you’re after, the Calent can do it. If it’s flavor that you’re looking for, the Calent can do that too.

Perhaps the best feature of the Calent is its lack of features. It’s just so simple to use. If you’re the type of vaper who just wants a dry herb vape that you can take with you out of the house, and that will work, the Calent delivers all of this and more. Not only does it work, but it works well, and the battery life is excellent to boot.

When it comes to portable dry herb vapes, the AUXO Calent is highly recommended.

The AUXO Calent is a small and portable dry herb vaporizer. It’s one of AUXO’s three products, all of which are focused on making the dry herb and concentrate vaping experience better and more convenient.

A standout feature of the Calent is that it uses dual conduction and infrared heating for more even roasting of dry herbs. It has four preset heat settings (up to 220°C or 428°F), and the device can also be controlled through the AUXO Connect APP. The device is powered by a built-in 2900mAh battery that recharges with Type-C charging.

AUXO specializes in concentrate and dry herb vapes and all of their products have a premium look to them. As of the time of writing this review, AUXO offers three products: the Cira desktop concentrate vaporizer, the Cenote portable concentrate vaporizer, and the Calent dry herb vaporizer that I am reviewing today.

I’ve been using the AUXO Calent for about three weeks now, and in that time I’ve used it a lot. I have a bunch of things to say about it (spoiler: they’re mostly good), so I won’t waste any more time with this introduction.

Is the AUXO Calent a good dry herb vaporizer? Is it a device that is worth spending your hard-earned money on? Read on to find out.

Design & Build Quality

  • AUXO Calent - 1

The AUXO Calent is a quality dry herb vape, and this was immediately apparent to me from the moment that I took it out of the box. It has a body that is made out of aluminum alloy and the paint finish not only looks good, but it feels good too.

The Calent is also a good size for a dry herb vaporizer and, thanks to the aluminum alloy body, it’s still quite light too. It’s 106.1mm tall, 45mm wide, and 25mm deep, and it weighs about 135g. The Calent is at that perfect size where it’s large enough so it’s comfortable to hold and use, but small and slim enough that it’s no problem to take it out of the house (which is the whole point of a portable dry herb vaporizer).

The oval shaped body feels solid and very premium. The Calent only comes in one color, a gunmetal gray, but it suits the device perfectly and keeps it low-key and discreet.

I also like the series of diagonal lines that run down each side of the device, forming a thicker horizontal line. It’s a nice touch of design to the otherwise plain body. Branding is also kept to a bare minimum, with a small Calent logo on one side and an AUXO logo on the other.

The fire button and connected adjustment buttons are made of black plastic, but they feel just as high quality as the rest of the device. There’s no wiggling or rattling and the buttons are firm and responsive. All of the buttons produce an audible ‘click’ when pushed. The throw of the buttons is also nice; not too shallow and just right.

Mouthpiece

AUXO Calent - 9

The Calent has an interesting mouthpiece that I’ve really come to like. It’s made of zirconia, so it stays cool during sessions. It’s oval shaped and nearly flat, and it rotates 360° at the top of the Calent. This allows you to tuck it away on the top of the Calent when you’re not using it, and swivel it out when you’re ready for a session.

You can position the mouthpiece in any direction that you desire, but I found it most comfortable to use it sticking straight out (facing the same side as the buttons on the device). This is because the top of the Calent slopes downwards towards the back of the device (the side opposite the buttons). Facing the mouthpiece on the sides results in your chin almost resting up against the device when vaping, and that’s an awkward way to vape.

Apart from the cool swiveling action, the mouthpiece can also be disassembled into 8 pieces for easy cleaning.

The mouthpiece is connected to the top of the Calent, and this top portion is also the cap for the heating chamber. The mouthpiece attaches magnetically to the Calent, and the magnet is very strong and keeps the mouthpiece firmly connected.

All you have to do is give the mouthpiece a firm pull upwards to detach it from the Calent, and now you have easy access to the heating chamber.

Heating Chamber

AUXO Calent - Heating Chamber

The heating chamber on the Calent is made of stainless steel and will hold up to 0.4g of material, however it’s recommended to fill it up with a max of 0.3g. There’s a line on the inside of the oven that indicates where you should fill to, so if you want the best performance then don’t fill it past this line.

From my experience, you should use medium-ground dry herbs with the Calent. You don’t want your herb to be too finely ground and powdery. Instead, it should be small and crumbled without turning into dust.

If you grind your herb too finely, you risk clogging up the mouthpiece and restricting the airflow. As a result, you’ll get less than satisfactory vapor. I suggest experimenting with your grind until you get it just right, but just avoid grinding your herbs into powder.

Features

AUXO Calent - 7 Buttons

The AUXO Calent isn’t as feature-filled, nor as customizable, as some of the competition. However, it still provides all of the necessary features to have a good vaping experience and it’s very, very simple to use.

The Calent has four preset temperature settings. The temperature level is indicated by four lights, which form a circle around the power button:

  • 1 Light: 365°F (180°C)
  • 2 Lights: 392°F (200°C)
  • 3 Lights: 410°F (210°C)
  • 4 Lights: 428°F (220°C)

The Calent uses a combination of conduction and infrared to heat up and roast your material. This may be the first time that I’ve seen the use of infrared heating in a dry herb vape, and I was interested enough that I looked up the benefits of heating this way. From what I’ve read, infrared is a gentle way to heat up herbs and thus preserves a lot of the flavor in your material. Super interesting!

The Calent takes approximately 20-30 seconds to heat up, depending on the temperature that you select. Once it starts heating up, the Calent has a built-in 3 minute session timer that will shut off the heating when the time is up. I found the 3 minute session timer to be perfect for quick sessions, and it’s easy enough to turn the heating back on if you want to vape for longer.

The Calent features haptic feedback and vibrates when you turn it on or off. It also vibrates when you start or end a session.

Battery Life & Charging

AUXO Calent - 5

For how slim and light it is, the Calent has an impressively large 2900mAh built-in battery. This really adds to the portability aspect of the device because you can take it out with you and not have to worry about it dying while you’re away from home.

You can check the battery charge level by pressing the fire button three times. The LEDs will flash green, and the number of lights indicates your charge level. Each of the four LEDs indicates a 25% charge.

On a full charge, the Calent will get you about twenty, three minute sessions. This is roughly an hour of usage time per full charge, and that’s plenty if you’re only using it for one full session at a time.

The battery recharges with Type-C charging, and the charging port is located on the back of the device. It takes approximately two-and-a-half hours to fully recharge, which is lengthy for sure. But for the amount of usage time that you get out of a charge, and how large the battery is, it’s an understandable charge time.

How to use the AUXO Calent

AUXO Calent - 6

The Calent is straightforward to use, and that’s one of the most appealing aspects of this device. There are no complicated settings, no screen, and no menu.

To start using the Calent, remove the mouthpiece by pulling up to separate it from the device. You’ll see the stainless steel heating chamber, which will work best when packed with 0.3g of medium-ground herbs.

Grind your herbs to a medium grind (not too fine!), and fill the bowl up to the line inside of the heating chamber. Lightly tamp your material down and replace the mouthpiece onto the Calent, ensuring to fit it back on properly.

To turn the Calent on or off, press and hold the power button for 3 seconds. The Calent will vibrate and the lights around the power button will illuminate.

To cycle through the four temperature settings, press the + or – adjustment buttons. The temperature level is indicated by four lights, which form a circle around the power button:

  • 1 Light: 365°F (180°C)
  • 2 Lights: 392°F (200°C)
  • 3 Lights: 410°F (210°C)
  • 4 Lights: 428°F (220°C)

The lights will be blue when the device is idle. When you’ve selected your preferred temperature, press and hold the + adjustment button and the Calent will begin heating the oven. The blue lights will flash around in a ring while the device is heating up. Once the Calent has reached your selected temperature setting, the ring of lights will turn a solid green.

Now you can swivel the mouthpiece out to a position that is comfortable for you to draw on and begin vaping. The Calent will automatically stop heating after three minutes as a safety feature, and also to preserve battery life. If you want a longer session, you can press and hold the + adjustment button to start another three minute session.

When you’re done with the Calent, press and hold the fire button to shut the device down.

AUXO Connect App

AUXO Connect App Screenshot

You can also control the Calent by downloading the AUXO Connect App, which is available for both Android and IOS devices.

The app is a little barebones, but it allows you to easily control the Calent without using the physical buttons on the device.

Other features off the app include the ability to change the device to stealth mode, which turns off the LEDs for more discreet usage, and the option to change the vibration intensity from to weak, strong, or completely off. You can also see your battery life in percentage at the top of the screen.

The UI of the app is simple and effective. There’s a large temperature reading as the main part of the app, and below it is a scroll wheel that allows you to select from the four preset temperatures. Once you’ve selected the temperature that you desire, you can press the large Start button and the Calent will begin to heat up. Once it’s up to temperature (in about 20-30 seconds), you’ll also see a live countdown of the session timer.

I like the app, but I found it easier to just control the Calent with the physical buttons. I do like the extra information that the app gives you though, like the countdown for the session timer. The app also easily connected to my Calent and reconnected seamlessly on subsequent uses.

Performance & Vapor Quality

AUXO Calent - 8 Mouthpiece Extended

The Calent is easily one of the best dry herb vaporizers that I’ve used in recent times. The flavor is outstanding, which probably has a lot to do with its use of dual conduction and infrared heating. As I mentioned earlier, infrared heating more gently heats up material, which in turn preserves the flavor of your dry herb. I can taste the difference between the Calent and other dry herb vapes that I’ve used, and it’s a close rival to the best convection vaporizers on the market.

The Calent delivers a loose draw, with a little bit of restriction. The restriction is barely noticeable, but it’s enough that it’s not too airy of a draw. Vapor tastes clean and warm, and only gets warmer the higher you set the temperature.

For the most effects from your material, you’ll want to use the highest temperature setting (428°F), but the two lower temperature settings are best for more mellow effects with the best flavor from your material.

The zirconia mouthpiece keeps cool, even with multiple sessions, and it’s positioned in a way that you aren’t going to risk burning your lips. The device itself gets a little warm, but it never gets overly hot.

Verdict

The AUXO Calent is an excellent portable dry herb vaporizer. It has a premium and high-end look and feel, and the performance and vapor quality are similarly excellent. The body is ergonomic and a pleasure to hold, and the aluminum alloy body keeps it lightweight enough to take with you anywhere. Not only does it work, but it works well, and the battery life is excellent to boot.

When it comes to portable dry herb vapes, the AUXO Calent is highly recommended.
