What is an e-juice, anyway?
E-juice, or vape juice, is used in every type of traditional vaping device. Itโs used to fill up vaping tanks and pods, and is also used in pre-filled disposable vapes. The device’s coil then heats and vaporizes the e-juice into a vapor the user inhales. The bottom line is that you canโt vape without vape juice!
But what exactly are these e-juices made of? The answer: not as many ingredients as you might think! In fact, very few ingredients go into making your typical bottle of e-juice.
What ingredients are in an e-juice?
A typical e-juice contains the following ingredients: nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and flavorings. Thatโs it!
Nicotine
Weโll start with perhaps the most controversial ingredient: nicotine. While not all e-juices contain nicotine, and there are many nicotine-free e-juices available, most vapers typically use a nicotine vape juice.
Nicotine is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in several members of the nightshade family of plants, which includes eggplant, tomato, peppers, and tobacco plants. It is a poison produced by the plant to deter insects from eating its leaves.
Nicotine is also highly addictive, and this is one of the main reasons why giving up smoking is so difficult. When nicotine reaches the brain, it stimulates the production of dopamine, a chemical that is responsible for feelings of satisfaction, pleasure, and motivation.
While many think that nicotine is what causes cancer, this is not the case. It is not the nicotine in cigarettes that causes cancer, but rather the tar that is produced from the combustion of chemicals and material formed when a cigarette burns.
Common nicotine contents of ejuices are: 3mg/ml, 6mg/ml, and 9mg/ml. There are also โnicotine saltโ ejuices available that contain higher concentrations of nicotine, such as 25mg/ml, all the way up to 50mg/ml.
Propylene glycol
Propylene glycol (PG) is a viscous, colorless liquid with a faint, sweet taste. PG is what produces the โthroat hitโ that many smokers crave. Higher ratios of PG generally mean a heavier throat hit. PG also carries flavorings very effectively.
PG is โgenerally recognized as safeโ by the United States Food and Drug Administration, and sees wide use in food processing, pharmaceuticals, and even in asthma inhalers. Additionally, according to the Health Canada website, โโฆthere are no endpoints of concern for oral, dermal or inhalation exposure to propylene glycolโ.
Vegetable glycerin
Like propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin (VG) is โgenerally recognized as safeโ by the FDA. It is also colorless and viscous and commonly produced from plant oils such as palm, soy, or coconut oil. VG is sweet, but with a slightly different taste than PG.
Vegetable Glycerin is effective at carrying flavorings and nicotine. However, compared to PG, VG is much denser and considerably thicker. VG is, therefore, used in higher ratios when cloud production is an important factor. Vegetable glycerin is used in beauty products such as shampoos and soaps, toothpaste, and foods.
Food-grade flavorings
The food-grade flavorings used in e-juices are just that: food-grade. This means they are suitable for ingestion, but there isnโt enough research to definitively say that they are safe to inhale.
That said, there isnโt any evidence showing that inhaling these flavorings is harmful. More research will need to be done in the future to provide a concrete answer. What we can say is that, when compared with the chemicals in a cigarette that are known to cause cancer, itโs probably safe to say that vaping food-grade flavorings is safer than smoking.
Nicotine salts or freebase nicotine?

Freebase nicotine e-juices are better suited to direct-lung vapers and those using high-powered devices, like vape mods and sub-ohm tanks.
On the other hand, nicotine salt ejuices are best used with low-powered devices like pod vapes. Nicotine salt e-juice is also what is typically used to fill disposable vapes. Nic salts are best for mouth-to-lung vaping.

Choosing your nicotine strength
Choosing the right nicotine strength e-juice is a crucial part of sticking with vaping. Even if youโve found a flavor you like, if youโre not getting the nicotine that you need, itโs going to be tough to keep vaping.
In the US, nicotine levels in vape juice can reach as high as 5% or 50mg/ml, which is significantly higher than in many other countries. For example, in the UK, the maximum allowed is 2% or 20mg/ml; in several other European nations, it is even lower. But just because 5% nicotine liquids are available, does that mean you should use them, or even need to?ย
It is believed that nicotine from vaping is absorbed more efficiently than from smoking. This means that even individuals who used to be heavy smokers might not require starting with a high-nicotine liquid. The strength of nicotine you start with ultimately depends on your personal preference, but here are some guidelines to assist you based on your smoking history.ย
- Social/Light Smoker: 1.5-6mg/ml freebase nicotine ejuice, 10-20mg/ml nicotine salt ejuice.
- Medium Smoker (1 pack a day): 6-12mg/ml freebase nicotine ejuice, 20-30mg/ml nicotine salt ejuice.
- Heavy Smoker: 12-18mg/ml freebase nicotine ejuice, 30-50mg/ml nicotine salt ejuice.
Nicotine in vape juice is nearly flavorless. However, it may introduce a slight bitterness and a more intense throat hit at high concentrations. Opting for a liquid with nic salts can help mitigate these effects.ย
Lower-powered pod-style vapes or those designed for a tight mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw are best for high-nicotine strength liquids.
In contrast, high-powered devices (above 40-50W and below 0.6ฮฉ resistance) are not suitable for high-nicotine liquids, as they can deliver too much nicotine with each puff.
