Our Verdict

The UWELL CROWN B is a good, if not flashy, little pod kit. It performs similarly to the CROWN D due to using the exact same coils, but it has less features and modes which makes it easier to use and better for beginners.

The CROWN B sits between the Caliburn A3 and CROWN D in terms of user-friendliness and features. It has more features and adjustability than the A3, but less than the CROWN D. I would put the flavor of these coils at or just below the flavor from the A3 pods. It still delivers good flavor and a nice vaping experience, but you sacrifice a bit of flavor for the ability to adjust your output level and draw.

Although I like what UWELL has tried to do with the RGB lights by making the CROWN B cool and fun to use, it makes the device very flashy and anything but discreet. If there was a way to turn off the lights that would make the CROWN B much better for me. In the meantime,  you and I will have to deal with getting glaring looks from those around us each time we take a draw on the CROWN B.

UWELL is best known for their Caliburn series of devices, which includes the Caliburn A3, Caliburn A3S, IRONFIST-L, and Tenet Koko, just to name a few. UWELL also have another, less popular line of products in the form of their CROWN series.

UWELL’s CROWN series includes devices like the CROWN D and CROWN M pod mods. These are slightly more advanced devices than their CALIBURN pod vapes, and also slightly larger in size with higher capacity batteries.

The latest addition to the CROWN series is the CROWN B. This is a box shaped pod vape that has been given the slogan “Ready, Go Bright” (RGB) by UWELL. Why, you may ask? Well, the CROWN B features a huge RGB light that illuminates the entire front of the device to indicate your power level and battery status.

The CROWN B has three output levels, adjustable airflow, and features both draw and button activated firing. The pod will hold up to 3.5ml of ejuice and can be refilled through a fill-port on the side of the pod. The CROWN B takes UWELL’s PA coils, which are the same coils as the CROWN D.

Design & Build Quality

  • UWELL CROWN B Pod Kit - 1

The CROWN B has a design that is unique from most pod vapes on the market. It’s a box shaped device that is 92mm tall, 42mm wide, and 18mm thick. While the corners are rounded, the edges are not, so it feels rough and sharp in the hand. The CROWN B is also quite heavy for a pod vape at 82g.

Most of the device is made of PCTG plastic, but there’s a zinc alloy bezel that runs along one side. The CROWN B only comes in one color, Iron Gray, so the plastic portions are a dark tinted plastic and the bezel is a gunmetal color.

The front and back sides feature a dull holographic design that is meant to look like a circuit board on the inside of the device. It’s a techy look and, although not to my tastes, looks neat.

This holographic design lights up when you activate the CROWN B and glows either red, blue, or green, depending on your battery charge level. It’s rather bright too and there’s no way to turn off the LED completely, so discreet vaping isn’t a strongpoint of this device.

The power button is large and circular. It’s surrounded by a click wheel that can be used to adjust the output to one of three levels. Both the button and click wheel feel great, and both work with a satisfying click.

Just above the power button/click wheel assembly is an airflow hole that goes directly to the pod. Airflow can be adjusted with a slider on the pod, but you have to remove the pod in order to do so. I always appreciate having the ability to adjust the airflow on my devices, but it’s not super convenient to do with the CROWN B and that’s a con.

As a nice surprise, you get two drip tips included in the package. These are 510 sized so you can swap them out for your own 510 drip tips if you have any. The one that comes preinstalled on the pod has a wider bore and will deliver a looser draw. You can swap it out for the other 510 drip tip though, which has a narrower bore and thus delivers a tighter draw.

Pod & Coils

  • UWELL CROWN B Pod Kit - 8

The pod for the CROWN B is a box shaped cartridge. It will hold up to 3.5ml of ejuice, which is more than average for a pod vape.

From the size of the pod, you would think that it would even hold more ejuice, but a lot of that space is taken up by the airflow path inside of the pod, which leads directly to the base of the coil.

The pod has a dark tint so seeing inside is nearly impossible unless you put the pod up to a light source.

The airflow control is located on one side of the pod. This is an airflow slider which can be moved up to restrict the airflow, or down to open the airflow up. The slider is easy to adjust, but firm enough to stay put. Locating the airflow control on the side of the pod, where it’s inaccessible when seated, is inconvenient to say the least, but it’s nice to have it there rather than no airflow control at all.

On the other side of the pod is the fill port. This is a side fill port which, like the airflow control, can’t be accessed unless you remove the pod. I’ve noticed a bit of ejuice around the fill port, as well as under the pod, but never a lot. The fill port seems secure enough, so maybe it’s just my messy filling habits.

The pod attaches magnetically and the magnetic connection is strong. I’ve dropped the CROWN B a few times and the pod has stayed attached, so that’s good news there.

The CROWN B uses the same coils as the D which are UWELL’s PA coils. These are available in two resistances:0.3Ω for DTL (25-35W), and 0.8Ω for RDL/MTL (15-18W). These coils push fit into the bottom of the pod and go in smoothly, although you do have to line up the flat side of the coil with the flat cut-out on the bottom of the pod. Otherwise, they’re easy to install and seem to create a good seal on the bottom of the pod.

Features and Functions

UWELL CROWN B Pod Kit - 13

UWELL’s CROWN series of devices tend to be more advanced and come with more features than their CALIBURN series and that remains the case with the CROWN B. It’s still simple enough that beginner vapers won’t have trouble using it, but it offers adjustable airflow and adjustable wattage which are two features you won’t typically see on a CALIBURN device.

The CROWN B has three wattage output levels which are indicated by the LED glowing either green (high-power), blue (medium-power), or red (low-power). Although UWELL doesn’t tell us the exact wattage output for each level, I suspect the outputs are as follows:

Low (Red)Medium (Blue)High (Green)
0.3Ω Coil25W30W35W
0.8Ω Coil15W17W18W

You can change the output level by pressing the power button three times and then using the scroll wheel to select your desired output.

The CROWN B features both button and draw activated firing, although button activated firing can be turned on or off by pressing the power button twice.

Battery Life & Charging

UWELL CROWN B Pod Kit - 5

The CROWN B is quite big and heavy for a pod vape, so where’s the size and weight coming from? I would like to say it’s from a huge battery, but it’s not. The battery capacity of the CROWN B is above-average for a pod vape, but I wouldn’t call a 1150mAh battery massive by any means.

Using the 0.3Ω coil got me anywhere from a pod, to a pod and a half of ejuice per charge, depending on the power level that I used. That’s 3.5 to ~5ml of ejuice and that’s pretty darn good. Using the 0.8Ω coil resulted in much better battery life, allowing me to vape around 2 full pods per charge (7ml of ejuice). That’s excellent for a pod vape and you don’t get much better than this when it comes to battery life.

Although the CROWN B features 2A Type-C charging, charge times weren’t as fast as I expected. I used a 2A charger plugged into a wall socket and the CROWN B took 55 minutes to fully charge from a dead battery. Anything under an hour is average, so I was expecting 30-40mins with 2A charging.

Performance

UWELL CROWN B Pod Kit - 6

The CROWN B comes with the same coils as the CROWN D and, all things considered, they don’t vape too terribly different from one another. Generally, you’ll want to use the 0.3Ω coil for freebase ejuices and RDL vaping, while the 0.8Ω coil is going to be better for nicotine salts and MTL vaping. But nothing in life is clear-cut and black and white, so these aren’t hard and fast rules.

The 0.3Ω coil is best (for me) at the middle or high wattage levels. I used a 6mg regular nicotine ejuice for the most part, but I also tried a 20mg/ml nicotine salt ejuice and the middle or low power level worked great. It’s a nice throat hit and plenty of vapor, so be careful with this coil if you’re using nic salts. Personally, I found it to be acceptable, but you might not have the same tolerance that I do.

Adjusting the airflow provides a wide range of possible vaping experiences with this coil. The drip tip that you use also has a big effect on the draw. You can achieve a RDL vape with the wider-bore drip tip and the airflow wide open, or a MTL draw with the narrow-bore drip tip and airflow closed. I personally enjoyed leaving the airflow somewhere at the halfway point with the wide-bore drip tip.

The 0.8Ω coil is for MTL vapers and best with nicotine salts. 20-35mg/ml work great, but I haven’t tried 50mg with this coil to tell you how well that does. I can imagine that the 0.8Ω will be good for higher-strength nicotine salts though, especially if you keep it at the lower power level. There isn’t much of a difference between the power levels with this coil, but it’s enough to fine-tune the draw just to your liking.

You can get a loose MTL draw down to a tight MTL draw with this coil and again, there’s a nice range of airflow adjustment to dial it in to just how you want it.

These coils have lasted for 20ml+ of ejuice each, which is already impressive, and I think that they still have some life left in them. They’re starting to fall off now, but I’ll continue to use them for another refill or so each.
