The bottom line

The Geekvape Z200 is an interesting kit. No doubt that it’s objectively good, but Geekvape have gone forward in some directions with this kit, yet backwards in others.

I’ll start off with the bad; the Z200 is not IP rated for water or dust resistance, and it’s not shock resistant either. This means that if you were waiting for a durable, button-controlled version of the T200, this still isn’t the device for you.

The Z200 also oddly features a Micro-USB charging port, a step backwards from the Type-C charging port that was found on the T200.

As for the good, it definitely outweighs the bad. No more touch controls for one! This is worthy of celebration by itself as it makes using the large, beautiful display on the Z200 just that much better (at least in my opinion). The all-metal design and holographic back panel are also pleasing to the eye.

Of course, you can’t forget the performance. The Z200 is excellent for vaping with, whether you use the included Z sub ohm tank or another tank that you own. All-around, it’s still a Geekvape mod and that means that it’s going to be good, even if it doesn’t have an IP rating.

The Geekvape Z200 is a vape mod that, while new, might look oddly familiar to some. It’s unlike most box mods on the market with its 2.4” full color display, but it’s very similar to one of Geekvape’s previously released devices, the Geekvape T200 (Aegis Touch).

The difference with this device is that there are no touch-controls. Everything is controlled by way of the two adjustment buttons on the side of the device, which will be a welcome change for many vapers. The touch controls were one of my main complaints with the T200; it’s not that they didn’t work, it’s just that the touch-controls over-complicated simple things like changing the wattage.

Well, it looks like Geekvape listened to the feedback out there. They’ve now released the Z200, which will cater to those vapers who liked the large screen on the T200 but wanted physical controls.

The Geekvape Z200 mod can fire at up to 200W and comes with Power, SMART, TC-SS, TCR, and Bypass modes. The Z200 takes two 18650 batteries for power. Shockingly, unlike most of Geekvape’s other mods, the Z200 is not IP rated for water or dust resistance. It is also not advertised as being drop or shock-resistant.

Included with the Z200 kit is the Geekvape Z Sub-Ohm Tank (2021). You get two coils in the box, one 0.15Ω coil, and one 0.4Ω coil.

In this review, I’ll go over everything that you need to know about the Z200 mod. I’ll also get into how it performs with the Z sub ohm tank.

Design & Build Quality

  • Geekvape Z200 Kit - 1

Just like the Geekvape T200, which the design of the Z200 mod is based on, this is a very, very good looking device. It’s handsome, modern, and feels like a high-end vape mod. The Z200 has a rectangular shape that is typical for a dual battery box mod, however the rounded sides and edges give it a refined look as well as a nice feel in the hand.

At 91mm tall, the Z200 is a good height for a dual battery mod. It’s also just 51.5mm wide and 30mm thick, so it’s not too bulky either. It’s still large, as is any dual battery mod, but it looks and feels slender.

The main attraction of this mod is the 2.4” full color display. It spans across the entire front side of the Z200 and, aside from not being touch-controlled, it’s identical to the display on the Aegis T200. The screen is very high quality and high-resolution. It looks extremely crisp and clear, displaying all the necessary information about the mod and the tank that you have attached to it.

The downside to this massive (and beautiful) display is that it’s a fingerprint magnet. Like the screen on your phone, you’re going to be wiping this down all the time, even if it isn’t touch-controlled.

Unlike many of Geekvape’s other devices, the Z200 is surprisingly not IP rated for water or dust resistance. It’s also not advertised as being shock or drop resistant. This was shocking to me, as I’ve become accustomed to durability being one of the main selling points of Geekvape’s mods.

With this in mind, I noticed that the Z200 does not have as much silicone and rubber as you would expect. This makes sense, as silicone and rubber are mainly needed for the water/dust/shock resistance.

Instead, the Z200 is made entirely out of metal (except for a silicone plug over the charging port). Although I would have liked the durability of more silicone, I have to say that the all-metal look is quite attractive. The Z200 features a brushed metal finish which is available in four colors: black, silver, gunmetal, or blue.

Another big difference from other Geekvape mods is that the Z200 does not have a leather grip. Instead, there’s a holographic panel which seems to be protected by a clear plastic panel. Like the screen, this plastic panel gets smudged with fingerprints quickly, so you’ll want to be wiping it down every so often to keep it from getting too grimy.

  • Geekvape Z200 Kit - 9 510 Connector and Charging Port

The top of the mod does not have a 510 connector plate, but a 510 connector hole. It’s located right in the middle too, so tanks will sit centered when installed. A nice pro of not having a 510 plate is that tanks sit completely flush with the top of the mod, instead of having a gap due to a 510 plate. Next to the 510 connector is the Micro-USB charging port, which is protected by a silicone plug.

The side of the Z200 is where you’ll find a large rectangular shaped fire button, and two smaller rectangular adjustment buttons. They’re essentially rectangle shaped, but with the corners clipped. All of the buttons feel great, although the adjustment buttons are firmer than the power button.

The battery door is spring-loaded and feels firm. It does not wiggle or move around and overall, it seems sturdy and durable. There’s no silicone or rubber here either, further cementing the fact that this is not a water-resistant mod. Two 18650 batteries will fit snugly inside, and the gold-plated contact points create an optimum connection.

Features & Functions: Geekvape Z200 Mod

Geekvape Z200 Kit - Display and UI

If you’ve already used the Geekvape T200, then what you’ll read here will be familiar. The Z200 functions identically to the T200, except with buttons instead of a touch screen. It has the same modes, features, and functionality, except for the durability aspect (in which the T200 is the clear winner).

I, for one, am a big fan of physical buttons on vapes. Sure, touch controls seem novel and cool, but they quickly get old and unnecessarily over-complicate things. Give me some good ol’ buttons over a touchscreen any day.

The Z200 comes with the following modes, all of which are pretty standard as far as vape modes go: SMART, Power, TC-SS, TCR, and Bypass. There’s no specific modes for other TC materials other than stainless steel, but you can set the TCR value for these materials in TCR mode.

SMART Mode is like a more beginner-friendly version of wattage mode. Here, the wattage is locked to a recommended wattage range, as calculated by the AS 3.0 chipset inside the mod. For instance, the 0.15Ω coil that you get with the kit is restricted to 70-90W in SMART Mode and cannot be set any higher. This prevents the coil from being burnt out and will overall net you longer usage times out of your coil.

If you’re not the type to have your vaping range restricted by a chipset, you can always use Power mode. This is your ‘normal’ wattage mode which allows you to set the wattage to anywhere in the 5-200W range of the Z200. This is the mode to use for rebuildable tanks, or for tanks other than Geekvape tanks.

To turn the Z200 mod on, press the fire button five times. From here, you can press the fire button three times to enter the settings mode, and then use the adjustment buttons to switch modes. Changing your wattage is as simple as using the adjustment buttons. This is much easier than when using the T200, which requires multiple steps to achieve the same thing.

The display shows two individual battery life indicators, your mode, wattage, coil resistance, amperage, voltage output, puff time, and a puff counter. The UI is clean, attractive, and practical to use.

You can lock the adjustment buttons by holding the both of them together. Once the adjustment buttons are locked, you can press the fire button three times to lock the device from firing.

You can also change the color of the UI by pressing the fire button three times to enter the settings mode, and then holding both adjustment buttons together. I think that the purple theme looks pretty neat, but there are a few other colors to choose from if purple isn’t to your liking.

Geekvape Z Sub-Ohm Tank 2021

  • Geekvape Z200 Kit Z Sub Ohm Tank - 1

If you buy the Geekvape Z200 kit then you’ll also get the Geekvape Z subohm tank. This is the 2021 version of the tank and it comes with two bubble glass tanks, both of which give the tank a 5ml ejuice capacity. The Geekvape Z is a top airflow tank, so it’s pretty well leak-proof, but the flavor is still very good because the top airflow directs air to the bottom of the tank.

The Geekvape Z uses Geekvape’s Z series of coils and there are five coils available, so you have choices for how you want to vape:

  • 0.4Ω Coil (50-60W)
  • 0.25Ω Coil (45-57W)
  • 0.20Ω Coil (70-80W)
  • 0.15Ω Coil (70-90W)
  • 0.15Ω SS316 Coil (60-70W)

You get two of these coils with the Geekvape Z200 kit: one 0.15Ω coil and one 0.4Ω coil. The recommended wattage ranges for these coils is a bit confusing, because there’s differing information on Geekvape’s website. On the coils, the 0.15Ω coil has a wattage range of 70-85W, but on their website it states 80-90W. The 0.4Ω coil has a wattage range of 50-60W on the coil, but Geekvape’s website says 60-70W. From my testing, the 0.15Ω coil is good up to 90W, while the 0.4Ω coil is good up to 70W.

These coils are plug and play and push into the bottom of the tank. There are two notches on the coil that need to line up with the notches in the tank, so take care to line these up properly so that the coil seats in fully and correctly.

The drip tip is a removable 810 and the o-ring is inside of the top cap. The top cap comes off with a quarter turn and this is how you access the fill ports. The fill ports are recessed into the top of the tank to prevent leaking, and the top cap has a silicone o-ring that creates a good seal when it is on the tank.

Overall, the Geekvape Z is a nice sub ohm tank and while the design is very simple, the build quality is good and it’s as easy to use as a subohm tank should be. The number of coils available also gives you good options for how you want to vape and there’s bound to be a coil that you like.

Performance

Geekvape Z200 Kit - 3

The Aegis Z200 comes with the same tank, coils, and chipset as the Aegis T200. As such, performance is nothing new and actually identical. This is a good thing though, as I really like how the device and tank perform together. I was impressed when I tested the T200 and it’s no different now with the identically performing Z200.

As a whole, I enjoyed using the kit very much. The Z sub ohm tank pairs perfectly with the Z200 mod to bring excellent flavor and vapor, whether in Power or SMART mode. The 0.15Ω coil works really great at 80W,  with flavor and vapor that are just right for me. This coil can go all the way up to 90W without the risk of a dry or burnt hit (90W is also the maximum limit as set by SMART mode), but I found the vapor to be pretty hot for my tastes.

The 0.4Ω coil is also great with SMART mode within the recommended wattage range. I preferred using this coil right around or slightly below 60W for good flavor, but it’s definitely not the winner for flavor if you put the two included coils head-to-head. While good, I preferred using the 0.15Ω coil more.

The Z sub ohm tank is great for direct lung or RDL vapers. You can adjust the airflow to get the draw just how you like it, and although it’s a top airflow tank, I wasn’t disappointed in the performance or draw.

A complaint that I had with the T200 is that the batteries seemed to be discharging at different rates, at least according to the battery indicators on the mod. Geekvape seems to have ironed out that kink with the software on the Z200 because I haven’t had that issue with this mod at all. The batteries seem to discharge at the same rate, which is nice to see.

Verdict
