The bottom line

I think that MOTI has done a wonderful job implementing their boost feature into the DUO 9000. It’s crazy how much of a difference just switching on the boost mode can make to the entire vaping experience.

Of course, with the 50mg/ml strength it’s going to be a very strong draw with the boost mode on and that won’t be for everyone. However, I can see it being really useful for the lower strength versions of the DUO 9000, particularly the 35mg/ml option. You can have a chill vape or a dense draw that really hits, depending on what you’re feeling like at the time.

The flavors that I tried are tasty without being too sweet, which is another positive point for the DUO 9000, along with the excellent battery life and convenient battery and ejuice indicators. Overall, there are a lot of positives for the DUO 9000 and not many cons that would stop me from recommending them.

My verdict? Give them a try and I don’t think that you’ll be disappointed. The DUO 9000 easily gets my recommendation.

The MOTI DUO 9000 is one of MOTI’s newest disposable vapes. MOTI is a company that specializes in disposable products, although they do manufacture some pod vapes such as the MOTI X GO, MOTI X POD, and MOTI Play.

The DUO 900 is just one of the 24 disposable vapes that is offered by MOTI. It’s one of their highest puff devices yet, offering 9000+ per device. Each one comes with 20ml of ejuice prefilled and an 850mAh battery that can be recharged with Type-C charging.

The DUO 9000 isn’t only a high-puff disposable though. Inside of each device is not one, but two mesh coils that can work together for fuller, denser, and more flavorful draws. You can vape with both coils by flipping a switch on the DUO 9000 to “Boost Mode”, or go for a more mellow vape by leaving the boost mode switch off.

We’re no strangers to MOTI’s disposables, having reviewed many of them in the past. These include the BOTO 6000 and BEAKER 5000. If you’re wanting to get familiar with MOTI’s offerings, I suggest checking those reviews out. For now, let’s dive into the DUO 9000.

Design & Build Quality

  • MOTI DUO 9000 Disposables - 4

MOTI went with a bold and new design for their DUO 9000 disposable and it’s weird but attractive. The case is made of two pieces, divided right down the middle of the device. There’s a clear casing on one half and a solid casing on the other.

The clear side has a solid plastic layer underneath, so unfortunately you can’t see through to the insides of the device. What’s cool is that there’s an image of a steampunk machine/engine that is shared between both sides, with the clear casing showing the full machine and the solid casing showing just an outline.

The picture of this machine is fully holographic on both sides of the case and the colors dance in the light. It’s a neat design that isn’t too overdone or flashy but which comes alive with a bit of lighting.

As for the size of the DUO 9000, it’s chunky. The measurements come out to 93mm tall, 52mm wide, and 24mm thick. These aren’t going to go unnoticed in your pocket, however they still aren’t as massive as some other disposables that I’ve used with the same amount of ejuice.

When you consider that these are filled with 20ml of ejuice, the size becomes understandable and even impressive. They’re on the larger side of disposables, yes, but they’re also smaller than what you would expect for the amount of ejuice inside.

Whenever I would leave my place, I found it best to just use one of these at a time to avoid bulking up my pockets. Two at a time is the maximum that I would recommend traveling with, especially if you don’t have a purse or bag.

The mouthpiece is rectangular in shape but still nice and comfortable to use. The mouthpiece opening is massive though and I’ve found myself regularly cleaning out the lint and pocket dust that gets trapped inside of it.

On the side of the DUO 9000 is the BOOST switch which allows you to switch the device over to using both of the dual coils inside. Just below that is a Type-C charging port, along with individual ejuice and battery life indicators.

Features

MOTI DUO 9000 Disposables - 12

Let’s talk about the main feature of the DUO 9000,  which is also the reason for the ‘DUO’ in the name — the dual mesh coils. Inside of each device there is a 1.2Ω and a 0.6Ω mesh coil. The switch on the side of the DUO 9000 allows you to choose whether to use only one of the coils or both, leaving it up to you to decide.

When BOOST is switched off, the DUO 9000 will only use the 1.2Ω coil. This will get you better battery life and a warm draw. With BOOST on, both coils will work together to provide better flavor, and a strong and warmer draw.

You can tell the difference right away between when BOOST mode is on or off. The draw is fuller and warmer with BOOST and flavor takes a definite step up. It’s night and day when it’s switched on so I’m glad to see that it’s more than just a marketing ploy.

The DUO 9000 comes in two strengths as far as I’ve seen and that’s 35mg/ml and 50mg/ml. A 20mg/ml strength would have been nice to see, but as it stands these are not TPD compliant so don’t expect to find them in the EU.

Each of these disposables is filled with 20ml of ejuice. They also have an 850mAh battery which recharges with Type-C charging. Together, MOTI says that you’ll get 9000+ puffs from each DUO 9000.

But how do you know when the battery is dying or when the ejuice is running low? The answer to that is the individual indicators located just below the charging port.

The DUO 9000 has two indicators: one for the battery and one for the ejuice level. They’ll display either green, blue, or red, depending on their level. The colors and their corresponding levels are:

  • Green: >70%
  • Blue: 30%-70%
  • Red: <30%

These indicators will give you more information on the status of your disposable, so you can prevent leaving the house with a device that’s nearly dead or out of ejuice.

Flavors

MOTI DUO 9000 Disposables - 13

The DUO 9000 comes in 11 flavors. That’s low for a disposable coming out in late 2023 as most other brands I’ve seen are coming out with at least 15 flavors at launch. The flavor line up for the DUO 9000 is all fruits and fruit/ice combos, with no candy, drink, or tobacco flavors to be found.

If you like fruit flavors then you’ll be pleased. But anyone looking for a wide and varied flavored range will be disappointed. The saving grace here is that their fruit flavors have proven to be good in the past and the options for the DUO 9000 are no different. I’ve enjoyed all of the five flavors that I’ve been using and I imagine that their other flavors are similarly good.

I’m going to describe how five of these flavors taste to me and what I think of them. However, keep in mind that just because I like a flavor that does not mean that you will like it. Similarly, if I don’t like a flavor this does not mean that you will not like it. This is solely my subjective opinion.

Cherry Blueberry

I didn’t save the best for last as I’m coming right out of the gate with my favorite flavor. There’s a heavy tartness on the inhale; a tangy, sweet cherry flavor that really hits the spot. This mixes in with a light blueberry flavor and the two go together marvelously. This a candied flavor for certain and not natural tasting in the least. However it’s really tasty and MOTI did a good job putting this flavor together.

Triple Berry Ice

I’m getting a blueberry and raspberry flavor but I couldn’t tell you what the third berry in ‘Triple Berry Ice’ is supposed to be. There’s a light blast of ice here that is subtle and not too strong. The ice component adds another dimension to the flavor and livens it up a bit. The blueberry and raspberry flavors are good and sweet, making this disposable one to try.

Kiwi Passionfruit Guava

This tropical mix is a bit heavy on the perfume notes perhaps but that’s also just the flavor of guava. There’s bold guava flavor on the inhale, followed by secondary notes of passionfruit and kiwi, all coming together really well. This is more of a guava flavor than anything, but you can definitely taste the mix.

Tropical Rainbow Blast

This is certainly a candy flavor and it’s heavy and sweet. It reminds me of those sour belts that you can get from the corner store, only without the sour tang. It also kind of reminds me of Skittles, but only kind of. The sweetness here isn’t too much, but the vapor is heavy. This is a ‘few puffs a day’ vape for me, not one for an all-day-vape, at least not for me personally.

Sour Apple Ice

The name says it all with this flavor. It’s sour, it’s an apple flavor, and there’s some ice too. The flavor is tasty without too much sweetness and there’s a nice sour element that you can taste all throughout the inhale and exhale. The ice comes in on the exhale for a nice refreshing note but it’s not so cold that it’s going to freeze your airway.

How do they vape?

MOTI DUO 9000 Disposables - 1

The boost option on the DUO 9000 is really interesting; I can’t think of another disposable that I’ve used that allows you to choose between using one or two mesh coils. This is the first disposable that I’ve tried with this feature and I’ve been surprised at how much of a difference it makes to the draw.

I can see some ways in which this could be useful. If you’re looking for a cooler and ‘weaker’ vape then leaving the boost switch off is the answer. The DUO 9000 still gives good flavor and enough warmth but it’s not as dense of a draw as it is with boost mode on. Of course, if you’re after the opposite and want a strong, dense draw with a lot of warmth and maximum flavor, boost mode being on is the answer.

In addition to warmth and flavor, the nicotine satisfaction is affected by the boost switch too. The units that I’m using are 50mg/ml strength, so even with boost off they’re quite satisfying. Turning Boost on makes them doubly as satisfying and delivers a lot of vapor and nicotine, so it’s not a mode that can be used all the time (at least not for me).

There’s no airflow control on the DUO 9000 but I rather like the draw. It’s a MTL draw that is closer to the tight MTL side of things but there’s no struggle to inhale or get them going. The draw activation is quite good on these and works without any problems whatsoever.

You’ll have to pay attention to the battery life indicators with these because the draw doesn’t change much as they die. I’ve found that the battery life indicator is precise but gives you a decent amount of notice before it dies even when the indicator is red. You’ll still have a few hours of moderate vaping even when the indicator is red, giving you plenty of time to reach  a charger.

Battery life is all around good with these too. I can easily get two-three days of vaping from a single charge and even more if I’m not vaping too crazy. The battery life is some of the best that I’ve had from a disposable, which makes sense because these are packing an 850mAh battery; quite a decent size!
