Our Verdict
There are so many ways to vape the MOTI X and that’s what makes this device stand for me. You can use your own ejuice with the refillable pod and coils or you can use MOTI’s pre filled pods for simplicity.
You can also vape either freebase ejuices or nicotine salt ejuices, depending on the coil that you use. Last but not least, you can use the MOTI X for either DL, RDL, or MTL vaping depending on your coil choice and how you set the airflow. It’s a truly versatile device and the flavor is good no matter which setup you choose.
The main drawbacks to the MOTI X are not performance based, but rather design based. It’s big, it’s chunky, and it’s heavy. It topples over and doesn’t stand steady. Oh, and the chrome bezel and clear plastic shell scratch easily. I also had some issues with the 0.7Ω coil reading incorrectly which was annoying.
As a whole though, the performance of the MOTI X is great and its versatility will be hard to beat. If you like the idea of having many options for how you want to vape, including refillable or pre filled pods, then check out the MOTI X. I give it two thumbs up.
The MOTI X is a new pod mod from MOTI that can fire at up to 40W. It comes with a refillable 4ml pod and a 0.35Ω coil. But for those who want an experience that is as hassle-free as possible, there are also pre-filled pods that are available.
The MOTI X is similar to the MOTI X MINI that we reviewed in the middle of last year, however they are very different devices. The MOTI X has a 0.96” display and adjustable wattage, which the MOTI X MINI does not. The MOTI X is also larger, has a different design, and a bigger 2000mAh battery.
The MOTI X is meant for DL and RDL vaping and is marketed as a smaller alternative to box mod and tank setups. Is the performance good enough to replace your mod and tank? What about the flavor? You’ll find out in this review.

Design & Build Quality
The MOTI X reminds me a lot of the MOTI X MINI, only it’s larger and more flashy. It has a tall rectangular shape with a rounded back and it’s 85.5mm tall, 24mm wide, and 26.5mm thick. It’s closer in size to a single battery mod than to most pod vapes and it has quite a bit of weight and heft to it.
The MOTI X sticks to the same general aesthetic as the rest of MOTI’s devices. It has a futuristic look that is sort of robotic, with a large chrome bezel that surrounds the pod housing and front panel. The rest of the device features a clear plastic shell that allows you to see into the device. You can see the 2000mAH battery, as well as the wiring and circuit board behind the front panel. It’s a cool looking design that is different from other brands on the market.
But while the chrome bezel and clear plastic shell are cool, they start looking worn very quickly. Small scratches and scuffs accumulated on my device after only a week of use, making my new MOTI X look like I’ve had it for months.
The back of the battery, which you can see through the clear shell, is labeled with a MOTI X logo and other branding. The battery is also labeled as 2000mAh which is quite a large battery for a pod mod.
The front panel of the MOTI X has a large square fire button, a 0.96” display, two circular adjustment buttons, and a USB-C charging port. The buttons are a semi-transparent amber color and they look like they’re made of ULTEM. All of the buttons feel good and work well. They’re also clicky, something that I like on my devices.
The screen is clear, and displays a lot of information. However, it’s not cluttered and it’s nicely organized.
Up top, the chrome bezel wraps fully around the top of the MOTI X and forms the housing for the pod. There are two large airflow slots, one on each side, and you can turn the pod to change the airflow. The pod attaches nicely with strong magnets and once inserted, it stays securely in the housing.
The MOTI X stands up straight, however the base of the device has only a small flat spot that curves out. This results in the MOTI X toppling over at the slightest touch, or falling over if you don’t place it down exactly straight. It’s annoying at best, and at worst the repeated drops could eventually break it.
Pod & Coils
The MOTI X comes with one pod and one coil in the box. It’s a refillable pod that will hold up to 4ml of ejuice. These pods use replaceable coils and you get one 0.35Ω coil that is included. There is also a 0.7Ω coil that is sold separately.
This pod and coil are identical to the ones that you get with the MOTI X MINI, so they are cross compatible between the two devices.
The pod is clear so it’s easy to see into it. Only about a quarter of the pod is hidden when the pod is inserted, so you can pretty much see the entire pod contents even when it’s installed. The mouthpiece is built into the pod and it’s a medium bore that is good for DL vaping.
The included 0.35Ω coil is a honeycomb mesh coil that is meant for DL vaping and freebase nicotine ejuices. The 0.7Ω coil that is sold separately can be used for either freebase or nic salt ejuices (I had a good experience with both).
Coils easily push fit into the bottom of the pod. The fill port is also located on the bottom of the pod. The rubber stopper is very deep and nicely plugs the fill hole to prevent leaking. It’s also easy enough to remove when it’s time to fill.
If you don’t want to deal with the trouble of replacing coils and filling the pod yourself, MOTI also sells pre-filled pods for the MOTI X. These pods are available in six different flavors:
- Raspberry Mint
- Melon Kiwi
- Strawberry Ice Cream
- Blueberry Raspberry
- Honey Lemon Fizz
- Rainbow Fizz
Each pack of pre filled pods comes with two pods in 3mg/ml strength. These pods are meant for DTL vaping.
Features
The MOTI X is a little more feature filled than the MOTI X Mini and so it gives you more choice over how you want your vaping experience to be. The MOTI X has a display, adjustable wattage, and adjustable airflow, so you have the option of fine-tuning it to just how you want.
The display on the MOTI X is 0.96” and full color, although it only displays orange and white. The display has a battery life indicator with five bars, puff time, wattage, resistance, voltage, a puff counter, and a locked/unlocked indicator icon.
Changing the wattage is as simple as using the adjustment buttons to turn the wattage up or down. You can also lock the wattage adjustment by holding the “Up” adjustment button and the fire button together (the device will still fire). You can lock the entire device by pressing the fire button three times and neither the adjustment buttons nor the fire button will function.
In addition to the wattage mode, there are four preset wattage curve modes which can be accessed by pressing and holding both adjustment buttons together. I didn’t use these modes too much, but it’s an interesting mode to have if you want to try it out and switch it up. Each mode is designated by flame symbols, with the first being one flame and the fourth being four flames. The wattage curve gets progressively higher in wattage through each mode, so you have the option of anywhere from a more mellow draw to a really high wattage draw with small dips.
Airflow adjustment can be achieved by rotating the pod. The pod rotates almost freely, although it does sort of “catch” at certain points. This “catching” is most noticeable with the prefilled pods. For how simple of an airflow system this is, the airflow can be changed by a surprising amount by rotating the pod. The airflow with each pod/coil are:
- Pre Filled pods: Airy DL draw to a RDL draw
- 0.35Ω Coil: Airy DL draw to a RDL draw
- 0.7Ω Coil: RDL draw to a tight MTL draw
One issue that I had with the MOTI X is the reading of the resistance. It consistently reads the 0.35Ω coil as 0.45Ω, and the 0.7Ω coil as anywhere from 0.8Ω to 1.0Ω. I didn’t have too much of an issue with the 0.35Ω prefilled pods though, which always read 0.35Ω-0.37Ω.
This wouldn’t be too much of an issue if the MOTI X didn’t restrict your wattage, but it does. This becomes a problem when it won’t read the 0.7Ω coil correctly and locks the wattage at a maximum of 10W (this coil is rated from 10W-16W).
MOTI X Button Combinations
- Power ON/OFF: Press the fire button five times.
- Lock wattage adjustment: Hold the fire button and up adjustment button.
- Lock whole device: Press the fire button three times.
- Change modes: Hold both adjustment buttons together.
- Clear puff counter: Hold the fire button and down adjustment button.
Battery & Charging
The MOTI X has a 2000mAh battery, which is great because it can fire at up to 40W. This 200mAh battery ensures that the MOTI X doesn’t die too quickly and gives it plenty of juice for extended vaping sessions at 30W+.
The battery lasted me a day or two on a single charge when using the 0.35Ω coil or prefilled pods at 30W. It really depended on how much I vaped. The 0.7Ω coil at 16W allowed the battery to last for even longer, and I got a couple of days out of this coil from a full charge.
The MOTI X has Type-C charging and a 2A charge speed. It’s quick to recharge and takes just under an hour to get back up to a full battery. That’s speedy for a 2000mAh battery and a huge plus for the MOTI X.
Performance
Out of the box, the MOTI X is a DL/RDL device. The 0.35Ω coil is meant for direct lung vaping and the MOTI X does a good job of covering the whole range of DL vaping with its adjustable airflow. If you want an airy DL draw then you can position the pod to the most open position, directly in line with the airflow slots. If you want a restricted DL draw then you can turn the pod so that the airflow slots on the pod are covered by the front and back of the pod housing.
This is the same for the pre-filled pods. Each one performs similarly to the refillable pod with the 0.35Ω coil because they use the same coil. You’ll get a DL draw or a RDL draw depending on how you set the airflow.
I got a lot of flavor from the 0.35Ω coil, both with my own ejuices in the refillable pod and with the prefilled MOTI pods. The honeycomb mesh coil does a good job of creating a lot of clouds, while also keeping the flavor true to the ejuice. My favorite of the pre filled pods were the Blueberry Raspberry and Rainbow Fizz. Blueberry raspberry has some light menthol to it, while rainbow fizz has none. They’re both very pleasant to vape on and perfectly sweet.
With the 0.35Ω coil, I vaped at 30-32W and always stayed within this range. This coil is rated for 25-33W so the wattage that I vaped at is bang on in the recommended range. This coil can go a little higher (~35W) without any ill effects, so you can find the wattage that you like best for you.
The 0.7Ω coil is surprisingly good for either RDL vaping or MTL vaping. For a device that does DL and RDL so well, I didn’t think it would be capable of MTL vaping just from changing the coil, but it is. I used a 30mg nicotine salt ejuice and a 6mg regular nicotine ejuice with this coil and the results with both are great. The throat hit with salts is on-point anywhere in the wattage range of 10-16W, although I preferred it at 14W. With freebase ejuices it’s best at the max of 16W.
