The Caliburn range from Uwell has gained significant respect and recognition within the vaping community. Known for their commitment to quality and innovation, Uwell has built a strong reputation for producing reliable and high-performing devices. Their Caliburn G series of pod vapes specifically has contributed to this reputation and has become a favorite among vapers. Devices in the G range include the Caliburn G and Caliburn G2.

Well, they’re back at it with yet more additions to the Caliburn range; the GZ2 and the AZ3.

Today, I’ll be taking a deep dive into the GZ2 and letting you all know if this pod device lives up to the success of it’s brothers, sisters, mother, father, uncle… (yes, this is how long the G series is).

Just as a bit of a background information, I used the GZ2 as my main, all-day-vape for 10 days straight, vaping 2 different kinds of e-juices. I am a moderate user when it comes to vaping, which means I partake in a few vaping sessions per hour.

This information should be taken into consideration when reading this review as certain results and aspects may differ for you if your vaping habits don’t match my own.

Now that that’s out the way, let’s get straight into this!

Design & Build Quality

  • Uwell Caliburn GZ2 - 5

The Uwell Caliburn GZ2 is a compact and stylish vaping device that excels in both design and build quality. With its auto-draw system, there’s no need for buttons, making it incredibly convenient to use. Just take a puff, and the device will automatically activate, delivering a seamless vaping experience.

In terms of design, the Caliburn GZ2 stands out with its small and chunky form factor. It’s just the right size to fit in your pocket with ease, allowing you to carry it wherever you go. When you hold it in your hand, you’ll appreciate its ergonomic design, which fits nicely and comfortably. There’s even a chance for stealth vaping!

The casing of the device features aluminum metal on the front, adding a touch of elegance and durability. On the back, you’ll find high-quality plastic that helps keep the device lightweight. This combination of materials strikes a balance between aesthetics and practicality, ensuring the device is both visually appealing and easy to handle.

One of the standout features of the Uwell Caliburn GZ2 is the LED lights. When you draw on the device, the LED lights up in various colors, creating a visually captivating experience. It adds a cool factor to your vaping sessions and makes the device feel more engaging. Additionally, the light strips on the side of the device further enhance its aesthetic appeal, making it a pleasure to look at.

Another nice touch is the device’s ability to vibrate and light up when detached from the battery. This feature not only provides a subtle notification but also adds a sense of sophistication to the overall user experience. It’s a thoughtful addition that shows attention to detail in the device’s design.

Pods

  • Uwell Caliburn GZ2 - 8

The Uwell Caliburn GZ2 comes with two pods and include a 0.8ohm coil and a 1.2ohm coil, allowing users to choose their preferred resistance level. It’s worth noting that the Caliburn G2 pods are also compatible with this device, which is a great plus for those who may already have those pods on hand.

To refill the pods, you simply need to snap off the mouthpiece, revealing a red top-fill port. This design feature makes refilling a breeze and helps minimize any potential mess.

Any of you readers that have read my previous reviews will know my burning hatred for side filled pods, so this is a huge plus in my book!

As mentioned before, the pod lights up when attaching or detaching it from the battery, adding a touch of visual flair and making it easier to keep track of its connection status.

Unfortunately, we reach our first downside of this pod system… leakage! Now, before you re-live the horrific memories of the first time you ever experienced a full tank leak, rest assured, it’s not that type of leakage here.

It’s more of an annoying leak. Try to imagine a small hole in the very top of your water bottle. It’s not going to cause you major issues, but when you take a swig, you may get a little leakage. After a few puffs of this device, it will start to leak under the pod itself.

But, all jokes aside, this is obviously a cause for concern, especially when the leaked liquid ends up inside the battery compartment itself. This issue not only affects the overall cleanliness of the device but may also impact its performance and longevity. And of course, having liquid anywhere near a working battery is never a good thing!

It’s unclear if this issue was from the pod design or the coil within, but either way, it definitely drives down the overall score of the pod.

Another area of concern lies in the design of the snap-off mouthpiece. To me personally, it just feels that the materials used are flimsy and indicate a potential for breakage in the near future. It almost feels as though it’s already close to breaking straight out of the box and it’s only a matter of time before it permanently breaks. But perhaps that’s just a personal dislike.

While the inclusion of multiple pods and the convenience of the top-fill port are positive aspects, the leakage issue and the potentially fragile mouthpiece design are definite drawbacks to consider in my opinion. It’s essential to handle the pods with care to minimize the risk of leaks and potential damage.

Located on the bottom of the pod is a small airflow control wheel. This can be adjusted to fine-tune your draw.

Battery & Charging

Uwell Caliburn GZ2 - 6

The GZ2 is equipped with a powerful 850mAh battery that delivers impressive battery life, especially during heavy use. Users can expect around 5-6 hours of continuous vaping before needing to recharge. This extended battery life ensures that you can enjoy your vaping sessions for a significant period without worrying about running out of power.

The device features LED lights that turn red when the battery is low. This visual indicator is helpful in letting you know when it’s time to recharge. Interestingly, even when the LED lights turn red, indicating a low battery, you can still expect approximately 1 hour of heavy use before the device completely runs out of power. This additional hour provides a buffer, allowing you to continue vaping for a decent amount of time before needing to find a charging source.

When it comes to charging the Uwell Caliburn GZ2, the device supports USB Type-C charging. This modern and convenient charging standard ensures a reliable and efficient charging experience. Moreover, the device comes with a Type-C cable included in the box, eliminating the need to purchase an additional cable separately.

Charging the device from 0% to full capacity is a swift process, taking approximately 30 minutes. This fast charging time is a significant advantage, as it reduces the downtime between vaping sessions and ensures that you can quickly recharge your device when needed.

Performance

Uwell Caliburn GZ2 - 7

During my testing of the Uwell Caliburn GZ2, I was impressed by its performance and overall vaping experience. The device’s 2ml pod capacity, when vaped at a medium to heavy rate, lasted around 3 hours. This duration allowed for a satisfactory vaping session without the need for frequent pod changes. Over the course of my testing, I used Sweet21’s Wild Raspberry Ice (6mg, freebase) for the first five days and then switched to Dinner Lady Core’s Vanilla Custard (6mg, freebase) for the following five days.

The flavor performance on the 1.2ohm coil was exceptional. With each draw, I experienced a delightful burst of flavor that truly enhanced the vaping experience. The notes and nuances of the e-liquid were clearly noticeable, providing a satisfying taste profile. On the other hand, the 0.8ohm coil impressed me with its remarkable vapor production. It generated thick clouds of vapor, adding an enjoyable visual element to the vaping experience.

One interesting thing that I noticed was that the GZ2 seemed to handle different flavor profiles differently. When vaping fruit flavors, I noticed that the device struggled to deliver the same level of intensity I had experienced with other Caliburn devices. The fruit flavors seemed slightly muted, lacking the full punch I expected. However, when it came to cream and dessert flavors, the device truly shined. The rich and creamy notes were pronounced and satisfying, hitting that ‘sweet spot’ with no problems at all. I wasn’t quite sure if it was a ‘me’ issue but i’d be interested to see other user’s take on this in the coming months.

As a fan of MTL vaping, I found the GZ2 to offer a superb balance between throat hit and vapor production. Despite its compact size and maximum wattage of 17W, the device delivered impressive performance. The vapor production was satisfying, creating a dense cloud with each draw, while the throat hit provided a noticeable satisfaction without being overly harsh.
