Our Verdict

The LUXE XR MAX is a device that does all three styles of vaping extremely well. You can get a great DL and RDL vape out of the box by using the two included pods and coils, but you’ll have to purchase a MTL pod and coil separately if you want to MTL vape.

This versatility isn’t something that you get from just any device and the fact that VAPORESSO was able to pull it off with the LUXE XR MAX is no small feat to accomplish. It’s truly impressive stuff.

The only major drawback to the XR MAX (at least if you’re going to use it for MTL vaping), is the size. If you’re after a DL or RDL device, then certainly the XR MAX is actually smaller than all of the other good pod mods on the market. But for MTL vaping, although it does it well, there’s the extra purchases of the MTL pod and coil that are required. On top of that, it’s chunky for a MTL pod vape.

Size aside, I love the design. It’s futuristic and cool with the RGB LEDs, clear shell, and touch buttons (which, I will reiterate, work very well). It feels solid and comfortable in your hand, and it looks impressive to anyone who sees it. The incorporation of an airflow control slider in addition to the pods for specific vaping styles makes it easy to dial in the exact draw that you’re looking for, which is another huge plus for the XR MAX.

Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that it takes GTX coils so there are plenty of options available. Available is the key word here because VAPORESSO’s GTX coils can be found pretty much everywhere. You’re not going to get this device and be stuck unable to find coils in the future, so it’s going to be a device you can use for the foreseeable future.

Compared to the LUXE X and XR, the XR MAX is certainly better for DL vaping and brings some features that those devices didn’t have. But out of the box the X and XR are better for MTL vapers.

The LUXE XR MAX is a new pod mod from VAPORESSO that might just look a little familiar. It’s the third LUXE pod mod device after the LUXE X and LUXE XR and it brings some features to the table that could make it the best one yet.

Like the LUXE XR, the XR MAX uses pods that take replaceable coils. However, it’s fully compatible with LUXE X pods with built-in coils, as well as LUXE XR pods and GTX coils.

Out of the box, you get two pods and two coils for RDL or DTL vaping, however it can also be used for MTL vaping by purchasing the MTL pod and coil (sold separately). The LUXE XR MAX also has adjustable airflow so you can further adjust the draw to your liking.

This device features adjustable wattage up to 80W and houses a 2800mAh ultra high density battery which charges with Type-C charging. It also features RGB LED lighting, a 0.54” OLED screen, and two touch buttons for navigating the UI.

This device was sent to me directly by VAPORESSO for the purpose of this review.

Design & Build Quality

  • VAPORESSO LUXE XR MAX - 3

Just from a quick look at the LUXE XR MAX, it’s obvious that it’s one of VAPORESSO’s LUXE pod mods. It has the same general design, with a large and thick shape, a clear lower casing, and a thick metal bezel. It has that same futuristic look as its predecessors and it’s all-around an attractive device.

The name LUXE XR MAX makes total sense when you compare the size to the LUXE X and LUXE XR. It’s quite a bit larger and a pretty large pod device in general. The LUXE XR MAX is 106.5mm tall, 32.1mm wide, and 26mm thick, compared with the LUXE X/XR which are 98mm tall, 31.5mm wide, and 21.6mm thick. As you can see, it’s a big boy.

The clear shell is made up of three layers: an abrasion resistant coating, a stain resistant coating, and the PCTG tube. It’s a crystal clear shell and it has held up to wear and tear during my day to day use. It’s still essentially scratch free and still looks new.

The clear shell allows you to see a small sliver of the circuit board on the front of the device (much less than you could see on the LUXE X or XR). On the back, there’s a holographic print with the word LUXE on it.

The top portion of the LUXE XR MAX features a large metal bezel which wraps around the entire top of the vape. This metal also extends down the sides and bottom of the XR MAX. On the sides, there’s a slight dip in the metal that runs down the length of the device and this makes it much more comfortable to hold than it would be otherwise. The word VAPORESSO is also engraved on one side of the metal band.

The fire button is a square with rounded corners. It’s firm but responsive and makes a nice click when pressed. Around the side from the fire button is an airflow control slider, which can be slid up or down to decrease or increase the airflow to the pod.

The slider stays where it’s set, but I would have liked it to be a bit firmer. It feels like it slides a little easier towards the top, which is when the airflow is nearly closed, and this is exactly where I want more control over adjusting the airflow, not less.

The XR MAX features a 0.54” OLED screen which is a new feature for the LUXE series of pod mods. It’s tiny but it’s bright and clear, giving you more information than you would otherwise have without a screen. The screen displays a battery life icon with battery percentage, wattage, and a puff counter. When you draw, the puff counter changes to a puff timer.

The wattage on the LUXE XR MAX can be adjusted using the two touch buttons located just below the screen. The buttons are responsive and work great. It’s most comparable to using a touch screen phone and VAPORESSO did a really good job with making them function correctly.

Lining the sides under the screen, in a sort of X shape, are two strips of RGB LED lights. The lights transition from a cyan blue at the top to a dark blue at the bottom. The lights come on each time that you take a draw or press the fire button. It’s not too bright or in your face and so I think that it’s a really awesome look. You can also turn off the RGB LED’s completely if you dislike them.

Pods & Coils

  • VAPORESSO LUXE XR MAX - Pod and Battery

The LUXE XR MAX comes with two pods: one pod for DTL vaping and one pod for RDL vaping. It also comes with two coils: a 0.2Ω coil and a 0.4Ω coil. These are VAPORESSO’s GTX coils and if these aren’t quite to your liking, there are a lot of other GTX coil options available.

The XR MAX is compatible with most (but not all) GTX coils and as of the time of writing this review the full compatibility information is not available. However, VAPORESSO’s GTX COIL section on their website should be updated with this information soon.

Speaking of compatibility, the XR MAX can take LUXE XR pods, as well as LUXE X pods (which have the coil built into the pod). This means that if you currently have a LUXE X and extra pods, you can use those with the XR max. It also means that even if, for some reason, you can’t find GTX coils but can find LUXE X pods, you can use those with the XR MAX too.

Back to the pods and coils that you actually get in the box. The 0.2Ω coil comes installed in the DTL pod and this coil is best at 55W. The 0.4Ω coil comes installed in the RDL pod and this coil is best at 30W.

Both of these coils are low-resistance, high-wattage coils so they’re best used with regular nicotine ejuices. You might be able to get away with using low strength nicotine salt ejuices with the 0.4Ω coil but I wouldn’t recommend it. Either purchase the MTL pod and a higher resistance GTX coil, or use another device for nicotine salt ejuices.

The pods feature a rubber stopper with a deep plug which is located on the bottom of the pods. The fill hole is long and quite wide, so there shouldn’t be any issues filling with even 120ml bottles.

Features & Functions

VAPORESSO LUXE XR MAX - Screen and RGB lights

The specs for the LUXE XR MAX are absolutely impressive for its size. Yes, it’s bigger than most other pod vapes but it’s also smaller than most other pod mods.

First thing’s first — the battery. The LUXE XR MAX has a massive 2800mAh high density battery. That’s larger than any other pod vape of this size and necessary for the battery-draining wattage that this device can output.

Just how much wattage can it output? The LUXE XR MAX can fire at up to 80W and features adjustable wattage which can be controlled using the two touch buttons on the front of the device. To adjust the wattage, press the fire button three times and the wattage on the screen will start blinking. From here, use the touch buttons to set the wattage up or down.

The LUXE XR features a “smart mode” feature which can be turned off but it’s on by default. What this does is automatically detect the resistance of the coil that you’re using, and then set the wattage appropriately. Smart mode also limits the maximum wattage that you can set for the coil in order to prevent running too much power to, or burning, the coil.

With smart mode active while using the 0.4Ω coil, the LUXE XR MAX will set the wattage to 30W and limit the maximum wattage to 32W. With the 0.2Ω coil, the wattage will be set to 55W and limited to a maximum of 60W. The resistance detection is pretty good and it’s usually correct the fire time, although sometimes I’ve had to remove and reinsert the pod for it to correctly catch the resistance.

You can turn smart mode off by pressing the fire button four times to enter the settings menu. Scroll down until you see “SMART”, press the fire button, and select “OFF” to turn it off. Also in the settings menu is the option to turn off the LED lighting or clear the puff counter.

Last but not least, the adjustable airflow slider on the side of the XR MAX allows you to further adjust the draw in combination with the appropriate pod/coil for DL or RDL vaping. It can also be used for MTL vaping with the right pod and coil, such as the MTL pod and 0.8Ω GTX coil that comes with the LUXE XR (more on this in the performance section of this review).

LUXE XR MAX Button Combinations

  • Power ON/OFF: Press the fire button five times.
  • Adjust the wattage: Press the fire button three times. When the wattage is blinking, use the touch buttons to adjust the wattage up or down. Press the fire button to confirm.
  • Enter the settings menu: Press the fire button four times. Here you can toggle on or off the RGB LED lights, turn SMART mode on or off, and clear the puff counter.

Battery & Charging

VAPORESSO LUXE XR MAX - Charging Port

Even with its massive 2800mAh battery, the LUXE XR MAX provides good but not stunning battery life, at least not with the included coils. The reason being is that the included coils work at pretty high wattage for even a pod mod, so it’s unreasonable to expect a week of use out of a single charge.

With that being said, you can still get a few days and a couple hundred puffs from the XR MAX on a single charge, it all depends how you use it. With the 0.2Ω coil, expect to get 150-200 large, long puffs if you use it around the recommended wattage of 55W.

The 0.4Ω coil has lower wattage requirements and so on a single charge you can get a few days of use and a few hundred puffs out of this coil, no problem. Battery life is much better with this coil, but you’re also sacrificing that pure DL draw and some of the warmth and flavor of the 0.2Ω coil.

Charge times are lengthy, but expected for the size of the battery (even with the 2A charge speed). I timed a full charge at  1 hour and 20 minutes. The screen displays a charging icon with estimated charging time as it charges, which is pretty neat. It also features pass-thru charging so you are able to vape on it while it charges.

Performance

VAPORESSO LUXE XR MAX - 9

The LUXE XR MAX is an even better device for DL and RDL  vaping than its predecessors and the 80W maximum wattage makes it easy to see why. It comes with a pod specifically for DL vaping and the 0.2Ω coil is lower wattage than any of the coils that came with either the LUXE X or LUXE XR, so DL vapers really get everything they need to vape and in a (relatively) compact package too.

With the DL pod and 0.2Ω coil you can set the airflow wide open at 55W and just haul. The amount of vapor and size of clouds that you can rip with this setup is crazy and totally not what I expect from a pod vape, even a pod mod like the LUXE XR MAX. VAPORESSO’s GTX coils have always been really flavorful and this coil is no different. The mix of flavor, warmth, and clouds is excellent and exactly what I want when I’m looking for a DL draw.

Sliding the airflow slider up to close off the airflow adds some restriction to the draw until it’s a RDL fully closed. But for RDL vaping, the other pod and coil are where you get the best results.

The RDL pod and 0.4Ω coil provide a touch of restriction even with the airflow open. This restriction in the draw can be increased by closing the airflow and you can experiment until you get it how you like it. There’s enough adjustment range with the airflow that you can really dial the draw in. 30W is good for this coil and, while the flavor has a little less punch than the 0.2Ω coil, it’s still very good.

I was able to get my hands on a MTL pod from the LUXE XR, complete with a 0.8Ω coil. I used this pod and coil to test out the MTL capabilities of the LUXE XR MAX and before I tried it, I was expecting to be unimpressed. Surprisingly, the XR MAX sets the coil to 16W with SMART MODE enabled and it’s a rather good MTL vape. Even with the airflow wide open, the draw is a MTL one through and through and closing the airflow makes it progressively tighter. I can see myself using the XR MAX with this pod and nicotine salt ejuices just as much as any other top nic salt vape.

I experienced a small amount of condensation with the 0.2Ω coil, but fortunately no leaking. The atomization of eliquids is also really good with these pods/coils and I didn’t encounter any popping or spitback either.

Verdict

The LUXE XR MAX is a device that does all three styles of vaping extremely well. You can get a great DL and RDL vape out of the box by using the two included pods and coils, but you’ll have to purchase a MTL pod and coil separately if you want to MTL vape.

  • I’m trying to decide if the Luxe XR Max can provide a similar vaping experience as the box mod vapes. I’ve been using this device for su ohm with nic salts and have had issues with leaking. I haven’t purchased the MTL coils yet. I am testing e liquid with higher VG to see if leakage is minimized. My question then is, do I need to switch to a freebase box mod or will this device give me the best of both?
