Our Verdict

Finding a good AIO device that can do MTL and DL is a task, but VAPORESSO has done a good job with the LUXE XR. Since it comes with two pods and two coils, you can set each one up with a different flavor of ejuice and then easily switch up your vaping style just by switching the pod. The flavor is great and although there is no fine airflow adjustment, rotating the pod is a good simple solution that allows you to achieve a different draw.

My only cons for the LUXE XR are that it’s a bit chunky, and I would have liked to see wattage adjustment. One device can’t have it all though, and these downsides aren’t nearly enough to outweigh all the positive points that this device has. It’s still much more portable than a larger setup for DL vaping, so if this is why you’re getting the LUXE XR then you won’t be disappointed with the portability.

Now for the big question; between the LUXE X and LUXE XR, which should you choose? Having used both devices extensively, I would personally choose the LUXE X. Not having to change coils is a beautiful thing, and the ease of use alone makes me prefer the LUXE X over the LUXE XR.

That being said, both devices deliver nearly identical performance and the only real difference between the two is the replaceable coils aspect of the XR. The XR is certainly more environmentally friendly as you can reuse the same pods. Ultimately, the choice is up to you. No matter which one you pick, they’re both great pod vapes for MTL and DL vaping.

The LUXE XR is another pod vape by VAPORESSO. It’s nearly the same device as the LUXE X that we reviewed a few months ago, except this device takes user replaceable coils rather than replaceable pods. Apparently, this is something that vapers wanted from the LUXE X. VAPORESSO obviously listens to their customers, and thus the LUXE XR was born.

Like the LUXE X, The LUXE XR is advertised as being capable of MTL and DL vaping and there have been some small changes to the LUXE XR pods that should make it an even better DL vape device than the LUXE X.

The LUXE XR can fire at up to 40W and it comes with two pods and two coils: one pod for MTL vaping that is paired with a 0.8Ω mesh coil, and one pod for DL vaping that is paired with a 0.4Ω mesh coil. You can also change the draw from looser to tighter by rotating the pod 180°.

VAPORESSO has released a number of pod vapes recently, with their latest (at the time of writing this review) being the XROS 3, XROS 3 Mini, and LUXE QS. If you haven’t checked those devices out then I highly suggest that you read our reviews, as all three devices performed extremely well in our testing.

Design & Build Quality

  • VAPORESSO LUXE XR - 5

Not a lot has changed here from there LUXE X. The LUXE XR is a nearly identical device, with a clear shell that allows you to see the circuit board inside. It’s a space-age, futuristic sort of look that a lot of devices are going with nowadays. The LUXE XR is still 98mm tall, 31.5mm wide, and 21.6mm thick.

I have a LUXE X on hand for comparison and if the metal casings weren’t different colors, it would be impossible to tell the two apart. The LUXE XR comes in a few different colors than the LUXE X, three of which feature speckles of paint with a two-tone color fade that gives the device a very galaxy-like appearance. I’m using the Galaxy Blue version for this review and I love how it looks. It’s just such a cool paint job!

The clear shell on the LUXE XR is apparently made of three layers: an abrasion resistance coating, a stain resistant coating, and the PCTG tube. VAPORESSO states on the product page that they did 1000 abrasion tests and that the crystal shell is 200% stronger. They don’t state how the abrasion tests were done, nor do they say what it’s 200% stronger than, but I’ve found it to be quite the durable casing.

I’ve thrown the LUXE XR into my purse, into cupholders, into my pockets, and the crystal case still looks brand-new. It doesn’t scratch easily and it isn’t showing any major signs of wear after weeks of normal use. It isn’t a magic wonder material though, so it does have a few minor scratches, but you would have to look very closely to see them.

The only major design change from the LUXE X is on the back of the device. Underneath the clear shell, there’s a holographic insert which has LUXE printed on it. This is different from the LUXE X, which has a large X on the back of the device. Aside from the color, this is the only outward tell that this is a different device.

Around the top of the LUXE XR there is a metal casing that elegantly meets the crystal clear shell. This casing holds a fire button on the front of the device, and a VAPORESSO logo on the back. There are also two airflow slots, one on each side.

Speaking strictly to the size and weight, the LUXE XR is bulky for a pod device. It has a weighted feel that feels solid, but it also has a larger footprint than other pod devices. For an AIO vape it’s a nice size and it’s certainly not as big as a pod mod, but there are smaller pod vapes out there.

Pod & Coils

VAPORESSO LUXE XR - Pod and Coils

The LUXE XR sets itself apart from the LUXE X with one big difference — it uses a pod that allows you to change the coils yourself. Apparently this was something that the vaping community wanted from the LUXE X, so VAPORESSO listened and delivered.

The LUXE XR comes with two pods: one pod for DTL vaping and one pod for MTL vaping. It also comes with two coils, a 0.4Ω coil and a 0.8Ω coil. These are the same type/resistance as the pods for the LUXE X, only these coils can be removed from the pod.

I really like that VAPORESSO included two pods with the LUXE XR, instead of just one pod and two coils. This allows you to have both pods on the go and quickly switch up your flavor and vaping style just by switching the pod.

Just like the LUXE X pods, the pods for the LUXE XR have an airflow hole on the bottom of the pod. On the DTL pod the airflow hole is larger, while on the MTL pod the airflow hole is smaller. You can also rotate the pod 180° for a looser or tighter draw.

The pods are tinted and the tint is dark. It’s not easy to see how much ejuice is left in the pod and I’ve had to hold it up to a strong light source every time that I want to check how much ejuice is left in my pods.

Each pod will hold 5ml of ejuice, which is more than most pod or AIO devices on the market. The pods are filled through a port on the bottom of the pod.

LUXE XR Features

VAPORESSO LUXE XR - 6

The LUXE XR is a button activated device so if you want to vape, then you have to press the button. It’s a generally simple device, as it does not have adjustable wattage, but it can fire at up to 40W. Like the LUXE X, the 0.8Ω coil will fire at 16W, while the 0.4Ω coil will fire at 32W. You can use either regular nicotine ejuices or nicotine salt ejuices with the LUXE XR, however I would stick to only regular nicotine ejuices with the 0.4Ω coil as the draw will be very strong with nic salts.

Turning the device on or off is done by clicking the power button quickly five times. Aside from this, there are no other button combinations to be aware of with the LUXE XR.

The LUXE XR also features airflow adjustment by way of rotating the pod. Speaking of which..

Airflow Adjustment

VAPORESSO LUXE XR - Pod and Device

As I started to mention in the previous section, you can change up the airflow on the LUXE XR by rotating the pod 180°. This gives you two options for airflow with each pod: looser or tighter.

There is an airflow symbol on the side of the pod which is hard to see in certain lighting, but it’s there. This symbol tells you that the airflow hole is located on that side of the pod. Looking at the LUXE XR from the front (the side with the button), the tighter airflow setting is with the airflow symbol on the pod to the right, while the looser setting is with the airflow symbol on the pod on the left.

The pods are labeled as RDL and MTL and when paired with the correct coil, they do what they say. The 0.8Ω coil and MTL pod delivers a MTL draw or a looser MTL draw, while the RDL pod and 0.4Ω coil delivers a DL draw or a slightly restricted RDL draw.

Battery & Charging

VAPORESSO LUXE XR - 9

The LUXE XR has a 1500mAh battery, which explains the chunky body and weight that it has. This battery is a larger capacity than most other devices of the same size, so at least the larger size isn’t for nothing!

The LUXE XR has three LEDs that light up on the front of the device. Every time that you press the button to vape, the LEDs light up to tell you where your battery life is at:

  • 3 LEDs: 60-100% Battery
  • 2 LEDs: 30-60% Battery
  • 1 LED: Less than 30% Battery

It takes approximately one hour to recharge the LUXE X to full from a dead battery. While charging, the LEDs will light up to indicate the charge in the same way as when you’re using the device. 1 pulsing LED while charging indicates it’s at less than 30% battery, two pulsing LEDs indicate 30-60% battery, and 3 pulsing LEDs indicate 60%+ battery. When it’s finally done charging, all 3 LEDs will be solid and lit up.

The LUXE XR also features pass-thru charging, so if you’re too impatient to wait for a full charge (like me) then you can still vape on it while it charges.

Performance

VAPORESSO LUXE XR - 8

The LUXE XR is a truly versatile device that excels at both MTL and DL vaping. It’s an oddity that a device can be so good at two completely different styles of vaping, but VAPORESSO have managed to do it with the XR.

That’s my favorite thing about this device; if I’m in the mood for nic salts and a MTL vape then I can use the MTL pod and 0.8Ω coil. If I’m feeling like blowing some clouds and not taking in as much nicotine, then I can use the DTL pod and 0.4Ω coil. Switching the pod takes seconds and completely transforms the vaping experience that you get from this device.

The DTL pod and 0.4Ω coil are just perfect for freebase ejuices. A 6mg ejuice hits just right and delivers ample flavor and clouds. With the pod rotated for a tighter draw, I get a slightly restricted RDL vape. With the pod rotated for a loose draw, it’s a quite airy DL vape that is comparable to a subohm tank with the airflow fully open. The flavor is excellent, although a good subohm tank is still better. However, the benefit with the LUXE XR is that it’s not as big as a full box mod and tank setup.

The MTL pod and 0.8Ω coil are similarly excellent, but in a completely different way. This pod and coil combo do really well for MTL vaping and nic salts that are 20-35mg in strength. The 16W output is the perfect wattage for a warm MTL vape and I get a nice throat hit that is just how I want it to be when I’m MTL vaping. The draw with the pod set to the more airy orientation is a loose MTL draw, while rotating the pod 180° to the tighter setting makes it a tighter MTL draw that isn’t too tight.

Verdict
