Our Verdict

Freemax has produced an incredible single 18650 pod mod with the Marvos X. I love the LED lighting and the customization options are exactly what I hoped for. In addition to the attractive design and excellent build quality, the performance is up there with other great sub ohm tanks and I think that this may be the most flavorful pod mod out there right now. Freemax never seems to disappoint with their coils/tanks and the Marvos X and CRC pod tank kit is another device to add to their flawless record.

If you’re looking for a new DL device that can provide a top level experience, I highly suggest checking out the Marvos X. It won’t disappoint you and you’ll be surprised by the flavor that this kit puts out.

The Marvos X kit is a new pod mod by Freemax. Freemax are known for producing some of the best sub ohm tanks around, but they are also responsible for great vape mods like the Maxus Solo, as well as great pod vapes like their Maxpod 3 and Onnix devices.

The Marvos X may look like a single battery mod but it’s not. It’s a single battery pod mod that takes an 18650 battery to function and it can fire at up to 100W. The Marvos X does not have a 510 connector but instead has a pod connection that fits the Marvos CRC pod which is included with the device. The Marvos X features LED lighting similar to the Maxus Solo which can be set to multiple different modes and colors.

The Marvos CRC pod tank has a 5ml capacity and uses Freemax’s MS-D mesh coils. Freemax are known for the performance of their coils so it will be exciting to see how they perform in this pod tank.

This device was sent to me directly from Freemax for the purpose of this review.

Design & Build Quality

  • Freemax Marvos X - 1

Although it’s a pod mod, the Marvos X is about the same size as a single battery mod. It does take an 18650 battery after all, so the size isn’t too surprising. With the pod tank attached the Marvos X is 137mm tall, 31mm wide, and 33mm deep. It’s an average size for a single battery device with a tank attached, but it’s much larger than other pod vapes out there. But if you’re getting this device then you’re getting it for the features, flavor, and DL experience so it’s not exactly fair to compare it with smaller MTL pod vapes.

The top of the Marvos X has a pod tank connector that is meant to fit the included Marvos CRC pod. This connector has an airflow control ring built into it which allows you to adjust the airflow for the tank. When the pod tank is inserted the Marvos X looks like any other single battery mod with a tank attached. Unfortunately this pod tank connector means that the Marvox X is not compatible with 510 thread tanks. Freemax does not appear to be selling an adapter at this time either.

The build quality is extremely high — something that I’ve come to expect from Freemax. When you hold this device in your hands it feels extremely solid and well built. There’s no give with any of the panels and everything from the buttons to the battery door are precisely machine cut and perfect.

The body of the Marvos X is made of metal and comes in three colors: black, silver, or gunmetal. The color of the body will depend on which panel design you pick. There are 3 panel designs for which there are a total of 6 colors. All of these panels are made of a leather-like material. The colors are grey, light blue, black, navy blue, brown, and green.

All 3 panel designs have a knight/medieval theme to them which looks kind of cool. It’s nothing too crazy so even if you aren’t a fan of the medieval period, you probably still won’t mind the panels. These panels are just as high-quality as the rest of the device and they look and feel great. The contour stitching around the edge of the panel is a nice touch.

This panel is also the battery door. When I first got the device I couldn’t figure out where the battery went because it didn’t look like this panel came off the device. It’s super flush and makes the device look like it’s all one piece. When I eventually figured it out I felt silly, but it just goes to show how precisely put together this device is.

The panel attaches magnetically and the magnets are strong. The fitment is also perfect, to the point where there is almost no movement of the panel when it’s attached. Once the panel is removed you’ll find a very neat battery compartment that is lined with translucent plastic (I’ll get to why in a second). The positive terminal is spring loaded and this makes inserting batteries a breeze. The compartment is snug but not too tight.

  • Freemax Marvos X - LED Lighting 3

My favorite feature of the Marvox X is its LED lighting. This lights up the contour around the battery panel (hence the translucent white plastic), as well as the area around the clear front panel. This LED lighting can be set to many different modes and to many different colors and I will go over this in the “How to use the Marvos X” section of this review. It’s a really neat look that isn’t too flashy and it doesn’t look cheesy in the least. If this was a single battery mod it would be my go-to device, no doubt about it.

The front of the Marvos X is similar to the Maxus Solo mod in the way that it looks. It has a clear panel that allows you to see the board and some of the inner workings of the device. I’m a huge fan of the transparent look and I feel that it makes the Marvos X look modern, techy, and futuristic. This clear panel also allows the LED lighting to shine through, which further enhances the techy and futuristic look.

There’s a large square fire button and two small rectangular adjustment buttons on the front of the device. Just below the adjustment buttons is a Type-C charging port. The buttons are all firm and produce a satisfying click when pressed.

The Marvos X also has a nice full color display that shows your battery life, wattage, mode, coil resistance, voltage, and a puff counter.

Last but not least, there’s a tiny physical locking switch located just under the Type-C port which locks the entire device. Sliding this switch to the left will lock the device, sliding it to the right unlocks. It’s more convenient than a button combination and allows you to quickly and easily lock the device before throwing it into your pocket or purse.

Marvos CRC Pod Tank

  • Freemax Marvos X - CRC Tank Fill Port

The CRC pod tank doesn’t look particularly special or attractive, but it pairs with the Marvos X nicely. It’s a pod tank with a straight glass that will hold up to 5ml of ejuice. The drip tip is 810 sized and wide bore and it is non-removable.

Coils for the CRC pod tank push fit into the bottom of the tank. The pod then attaches magnetically to the Marvos X. You can use the airflow adjustment ring on the Marvos X to adjust the airflow for anywhere from an airy direct lung draw down to a slightly restricted DL draw. The airflow is a little loud and makes almost a buzzing noise at times if you have the airflow closed off too much but surprisingly it doesn’t feel turbulent at all.

At the top of the tank there is a small FREEMAX logo and a small arrow. If you lift the top of the tank and push it back where the arrow is, you’ll gain access to the fill port. It’s a clever filling design that makes it less likely that the tank will open up in your pocket or bag. The fill port is lined with silicone to prevent leaking. It fills easily with 30/60ml bottles, but larger 100ml bottles are difficult to fill with because the non-removable drip tip gets in the way.

How to use the Marvos X

Freemax Marvos X - LED Lighting 4

The Marvos X has a lot of features and settings for a pod mod. It has 4 modes: power, smart mode, VPC, and bypass. By default the Marvos X will be in smart mode which automatically sets the wattage to the ideal wattage for your coil. Smart mode will also limit the wattage to the max wattage of the coil so that you don’t accidentally set the wattage too high. This is great for new vapers as it will prevent them from accidentally burning the coil by using too high of a wattage.

If you aren’t a fan of the software nanny then you can set the mode to wattage and this will allow you to set the wattage wherever you like, even if this is outside of the recommended wattage range. The Marvos X can fire at up to 100W but keep in mind that the included coils are recommended to be vaped at 50W and 80W max.

In addition to the modes there is a settings menu that allows you to change the theme color, as well as an option to control the LED lighting. You can turn the LED on or off, or select from one of 10 LED modes like always on, flashing, circle, or tetris. The modes are all really cool but personally I preferred mode 5, “Waterfall”. This makes the LED change from top to bottom in different colors and it looks awesome. You can also play with a demo of these lighting modes and adjust the settings on the official Marvos X page on Freemax’s website.

You can further customize the LED lighting by changing the brightness or speed. You can also set it to multicolor or single color mode and select which single color you want. This is exactly the type of LED control that I wish I had on the Maxus Solo so it’s neat to see it here.

To get started with the Marvos X is simple. Out of the box it comes with the 0.15Ω coil pre-installed so you can leave this coil in the tank. Lift on the top cap and push back where it says Freemax with a small arrow. Fill up the pod tank and wait 5 minutes.

Once you’ve waited you can pop the tank onto the device and smart mode will automatically set the wattage (60W is the smart wattage level for the 0.15Ω coil). Now you can press the fire button to vape and adjust the airflow control ring to get the airflow to your liking.

Performance

Freemax Marvos X - LED Lighting 1

The Marvos X uses Freemax’s newest line of coils, their MS-D series of coils. These coils use their FM COILTECH 5.0 technology and their hilariously named Double-D mesh.

Freemax is known for their coils and the flavor that they provide and the Marvos X kit continues to live up to that reputation. These coils use military-grade SS904L mesh and tea fiber cotton and this provides clean and crisp flavor from both coils. The flavor is unreal for a pod tank and competes with some of the best sub ohm tanks that I’ve used.

Both the 0.15Ω coil and the 0.25Ω coil are great, but I preferred the warmer vapor and slightly better flavor of the 0.15Ω coil at 70W. The 0.25Ω coil is a cooler vape at 40W but still provides excellent flavor and clouds.

Leaving the airflow all of the way open was the ideal way to vape with this kit, but closing the airflow a bit was also pretty good. As I mentioned in a previous section, the airflow tends to start ‘buzzing’ a bit if you close down the airflow too much and leaving it open eliminates this issue.

One downside to this kit is that if you’re using the 0.15Ω coil, the battery life isn’t the greatest. Sure you get great flavor, but battery life is short. The good thing is that because this uses an external battery you can always swap out the battery so be sure to have an extra on-hand.

Verdict

We never got to know the why.. 🙁

Great review overall – will look into this device for sure.

    • Thanks for pointing this out! It was impossible to remove for me but maybe I just wasn’t trying hard enough.
